Why Some Universities Are Quietly Bringing Back Final Exams

For most of the past decade, US higher education has moved away from comprehensive final exams. Many courses replaced them with continuous assessment: a mix of weekly problem sets, quizzes, projects, and participation grades. By 2026, the pendulum is swinging back at a meaningful number of institutions. The return of the comprehensive final is not a wholesale reversion. The Integrity Argument
The integrity case is the more obvious driver. Continuous assessment relies on regular small-stakes assignments, many of which are completed outside the classroom. The rise of AI-assisted writing and problem-solving has made it harder for faculty to verify that student work reflects student learning. A 2025 survey of 2,400 university instructors found that 68 percent reported significant uncertainty about whether their student work distributions reflected student capability or AI use.
Proctored final exams, by contrast, take place under controlled conditions. They cannot be outsourced to AI without observable evidence. For students currently in courses with comprehensive finals, the practical implications are study habits that emphasize cumulative review rather than just current material. Spaced retrieval practice, where students periodically test themselves on earlier material, produces significantly better final exam performance than concentrated review in the last week.
For students choosing courses or programs, the trend suggests that the era of “no finals” universities may be partially over. Students who have built their study habits around continuous assessment alone may find themselves under-prepared for cumulative evaluation.
