Math Tracking in Middle School: Who Decides and How It Plays Out

Advocating for support alongside placement often produces better outcomes than advocating only for placement.

What Districts Are Trying

Several districts are experimenting with hybrid models that preserve some tracking while addressing the equity concerns. The approach addresses the early decision concern while maintaining differentiated instruction at the later stage.

The Broader Pattern

The math tracking question is one of the more consequential decisions US schools make about student trajectories. The decisions deserve careful thought, transparent processes, and continuous evaluation. The districts that approach tracking with these features tend to produce better outcomes than the districts that maintain tracking systems on autopilot, regardless of whether they ultimately use more or less tracking.
