For students, the practical implication is the gap between perceived and actual phone use. Many students believe their phone checking is minimal because each individual instance feels brief. The accumulated effect is substantial enough to consume large portions of class time. Students who want to maintain academic focus often benefit from physical separation from their phones, even when they believe they can resist the impulse to check.
The behavioral change is uncomfortable initially. Students who try keeping phones in backpacks for a week typically report adjustment difficulty followed by reduced anxiety about phone access. The students who maintain the practice often report improved classroom engagement and lower overall phone use across their lives.
